Edward Ashton Cannell was a member of the Langham Club, the London Sketch Club, the United Society of Artists, various other art societies, and fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. 

He carried out various commissions for Bass, BP, Foyles and Cassels. In 1975, he won the gold medal at the Paris Salon.  Ashton traveled around the British Isles interpreting the character, mood, and atmosphere of the island.
