Carl Gotzloff

Biography from Bonhams Knightsbridge

Carl Gotzloff was born in Dresden and in 1825 accompanied his patron Baron Karl von Uxkull-Gyllenband to live in Naples.  In 1835 he was appointed Court Painter to Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies and in 1846 was appointed agent for the museums of Berlin by King Friederich Wilhelm IV.  Sadly the artist died in penury following the kidnapping of his son Guido by bandits in 1864 and the subsequent ransom payment.
