Marcus Jacobi

Biography from Dobiaschofsky Auktionen, Bern

Marcus Jacobi was born the son of the owner of Pianofabrik Burger & Jacobi in Biel, where he spent his childhood and school years.  Although he showed a great talent for painting early on, after high school he attended first medical school in Bern and graduated in Medicine.  He completed his education in Paris and picturesque Munich with Heinrich Knirr.

On the occasion of the National Exhibition Bern 1914, he created a monumental painting.  In the 1920s, he married the daughter of a doctor, and moved with her, as a painter after Merligen, on Lake Thun.  Marcus Jacobi became famous with his numerous lake and river landscapes.  Here, he was mainly inspired by the riverside areas of Biel and Thun.  In addition, he worked as church painter, in 1937 in Merligen and in 1942 in the Bieler Paul Church.
