Biography
Felix Labisse

Born in 1918 from German Jewish parents who were active in cotton trading, Ernesto travelled to South America with his parents just before the Second World War. He began collecting works when he was only eighteen years old, before moving to São Paulo in 1950 and co-founding the Museum of Modern Art and the Sao Luis Gallery in support of Brazilian artists. It was here that Ernesto met his wife Liuba, a sculptor from Bulgaria who had trained with Germaine Richier in Paris. Over the next 60 years they patiently formed a unique collection of art, which proved to be one of the most original, coherent and eclectic of its time.
