Born in 1925, Michel Lablais was a late child and only son. He was attracted to drawing early on and studied at the School of Applied Arts (1941-1944). He then became a cartographer in Indochina (1945-1947).
In 1956, the artist presented his first solo exhibition in Paris followed by regular exhibitions in France, the US, Belgium and Germany. He participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1964), the City of Paris (1976, the National Museum of Modern Art Center Georges Pompidou, and others.
The artist stated in 1990:
