Adolf Methfessel (b. 1836- d. 1909)
Born in Bern, Switzerland, he finished an apprenticeship as a gardener before taking his first drawing classes in 1856 during a stay in Brussels, Belgium. Since his parents did not approve of the idea of his becoming a painter, he went to Berlin, Germany to study garden architecture. In 1864, Methfessel went to Buenos Aires, Argentina to work as a garden architect. He also worked as a scientific drawing specialist and served as drawing teacher at the State College of Tucumán from 1878 to 1885. During this time, he painted the South American landscape, forests and waterfalls in watercolor and oil.
He returned to Bern in 1895 and continued painting landscapes.
Adolf Methfessel died in Bern in 1909.
