Laxman Pai (b. 1926)
Laxman Pai received his art education at the Sir J. J. School of art in Mumbai and there received the prestigious Mayo medal. In 1951, he moved to Paris, together with his artist friend Sadanand Bakre, where they met the artists Syed Haider Raza, Francis Newton Souza and Akbar Padamsee, who had already settled there. Laxman Pai immediately enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied painting and drawing and experimented with new printing techniques. During the ten years that he lived in Paris, Laxman Pai had nine single exhibitions and further ones elsewhere, exhibiting his works in London, Munich, Hanover, Stuttgart and New York. His work has been honored many times with important Indian awards and prizes. His works are part of public museum collections, such as the Musée d'Art Moderne Paris, the New York Public Library, the Berlin Museum, the Ben & Abbey Grey Foundation (Los Angeles), as well as of the National Gallery of Modern Art New Delhi, Punjab, Madras and Nagpur.
