Konstantinos Parthenis

Biography from the Archives of askART

Konstantinos Parthenis (10 May 1878 - 25 July 1967) was a distinguished Greek painter.
Parthenis was born on May 10, 1878, in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek father and an Italian mother. From 1895 to 1903, he studied painting in Vienna, under Karl Dieffenbach.

In 1903, Parthenis settled in Greece and worked mainly as a painter of religious themes. From 1909 until 1914, he studied post-impressionist art in Paris, returning to Greece in 1915.
From 1930 until 1946, Parthenis taught in the School of Fine Arts. Towards the end of his life he was paralyzed and stopped painting. He died on July 25, 1967.

Parthenis broke with the Greek academic tradition of the 19th century and introduced modern elements together with traditional themes, such as the figure of Christ, in his art.
