Born in Reading, Field Talfourd emigrated to Canada in 1832. He later returned to England where he made his career as a portraitist. Probably his best-known works are the 1859 chalk drawings he made of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, both held by the National Portrait Gallery. Talfourd lived in Plymouth in the 1850s and participated in numerous sketching expeditions throughout the Devon area.
