Theodoros Vryzakis

Theodoros Vryzakis (1814-1878) was born in Thebes (Boeotia) and is considered the first of a number of Greek artists who represented the Munich School and reflected the European intellectual stance at the time toward Classicism, Romanticism and Philhellenism. 

In his works Vryzakis almost exclusively painted subjects of the Greek War of Independence.  This seems to be deeply related to his childhood memories, when he experienced the beginning of the war in 1821 and his father's brutal death by the Ottomans.  After succeeding in fleeing to Germany, Vryzakis began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1844 and met famous artists like Carl Wilhelm von Heideck, Peter von Hess and Heinrich   ...  Displaying 750 of 1079 characters.
