Herbert Zang was born in 1924 in Krefeld. Shortly after the war he began his studies at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf where he studied with Otto Pankok until 1949. Several study trips followed as well as longer stays in Paris, where he met the artist Wols.
In addition to figurative works Zangs also created abstract works he calls ‘Whitening’. Further work groups included ‘Foldings’, ‘Plus-Minus’ works, ‘Knottings’, relief-paintings as well as travel images.
Zangs was honored with numerous awards and exhibitions, amongst others at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Contemporary Art Collection of Germany in Bonn and the Stuttgart State Gallery. Zangs died in 2003.
