Karl Schmalhaus was active/lived in Iowa.  Karl Schmalhaus is known for woodland landscape.

Karl Schmalhaus

From Germany where he had served a a light cavalryman in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Karl Schmalhaus emigrated to the United States and settled in Davenport, Iowa. There he and his older brother had jobs tinting photographs, and Karl also became a painter of landscapes.

He was the uncle of artist Edna Humphreys Miller.

Submitted December 2003 by Brent Stevens of Constantine, Michigan. His source is a sale bill printed for sales of the artist's work that took place in Van Wert, Ohio on March 5, 1977.
