Wilhelm Johann Bader was born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1855. Known as a painter and graphic artist, Wilhelm took drawing lessons under Ernst Rauch. In 1873, he briefly studied at the Academy of Berlin. In 1874, he studied at the Academy in Munich under Ludwig von Löfftz, Otto Seitz and Andreas Müller. Wilhelm embarked on study tours in 1875 in Tyrol, with another study trip following in 1880 to Venice.
In 1883, Wilhelm Bader painted the Neuschwanstein Castle. Returning to his birthplace of Darmstadt in 1887, Wilhelm was the head of the local painting school. In 1898, he was appointed Chairman of the Free Association of Darmstadt Artists. In 1910, he was appointed as a professor at same.
