Siegwald Johnnes Dahl is born in 1827 as son of the Norwegian landscape painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, a friend of Casper David Friedrich. From 1842-46 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, followed by study trips to Paris, London and Norway. He was made an honorary member of the Dresden Academy in 1864. Dahl was primarily an animal painter, his fondness for this subject is already expressed in his landscapes through the detailed representation of horses, deer and birds.
