Wilkinson John Gilbert (1805-c.1862)

Born at Wrentham, Suffolk on 14 May 1805 and baptized the following day, son of George Gilbert and his wife Betsy née Johnson.  He married at Halesworth, Suffolk in 1840, 21 year old Harriet Symonds and in 1846 Gilbert was an animal, portrait and landscape artist living at Pound Street, Halesworth with his wife, daughter Ada Jane (b.1841) and son Edwin C (b.1848).  Painter of many equestrian and sporting scenes, his pictures were decorative and he paid great attention to detail.  He appears to have only exhibited only one painting publicly, at the Portland Gallery in 1851, his pair Shooting and Hare Coursing (12" x 16½") signed and dated 1856, were auctioned at Sotheby  ...  Displaying 750 of 1450 characters.
