Liam Hanley was born in London, son of the novelist James Hanley. Largely self-taught he did briefly attend the Central School of Art in London. He worked as a newspaper and television journalist for thirty years and held his first solo exhibition in 1962 at the Royal Society of Arts.
Other exhibitions include regular shows at the Thackeray Gallery in London, the Phoenix Gallery, London, Kingston and Lavenham, and at Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal. His group exhibitions include exhibiting at the Royal Academy and his work is the collections of Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and Abbot Hall Gallery, Kendal
