George Ioannou was born in Athens, Greece in 1926. He is a Greek painter and engraver, and considered a pioneer and leading representative of pop art in Greece.

In his work, which moves in the field of pop art and comics with diffuse criticism figuration, it has created a distinctive personal style. Interested landscape, still life, the internal and the human form, followed by the earliest works of the perceptions of impressionism. Then, adopting characteristics of pop art and using the technique of comics, turned to the satire of social and political reality, creating compositions with surreal atmosphere and symbolic allusions.
He studied painting in Athens with teachers Kostis Eliades and Theodoros Drosos; and then in Paris at the Academie Julian in the workshops of Caude Schurr and Mac Avoy. Followed by many study trips to the artistic centers of Europe, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, France, England.
His first solo presentation in Athens took place in the gallery Libra in October 1959. This was followed by 23 individual presentations in galleries in Athens and abroad such as the Musee des Beaux Arts d'Ostende, in the gallery Isy Brachot, Brussels -the which was permanent synergatis- and galleries Pagani, Milan, among others.
He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, among which the Venice Biennale in 1970 and the Europalia in Brussels in 1982. His work has received awards including the European Contest Prix Europa de Peinture de la Ville d Ostende prize solo exhibition at the Musee des Beaux Arts d'Ostende. Among the jury members were Hodin, Apolllonio, Argan, Penrose, Restany and Matney.
His artistic creation also includes dealing with engraving, in which was published in "Album 1940 - 1974" with a hundred monotypes, inspired by the Greco-Italian War, the Occupation, the Resistance, the Civil War and the Dictatorship.
In 2001, he released his photo book "Athens through postcard of the past."
He has been involved with the study of art themes and texts have been published in newspapers and magazine Athenian type.
