Biography from Auctionata

The artist Jan Christianus Schotel lived and worked in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, which is located about twenty kilometers south-east of Rotterdam.  The artist was trained by Dordrecht marine painters such as Martinus Schouman (1770-1848) and Jacob van Strij (1756-1815), who influenced and guided his artistic development.  Schotel later became a member of the local artists' association 'Teekengenootschap Pictura' and was the father of Petrus Johannes Schotel (1808-1865), who continued his profession as a marine painter.
