After having war experience during his early teenage years, Masaaki Yamada made his mind to dedicate himself to painting at the age of sixteen. The devotion resulted in a series of “Work” spanning 40 years from 1956. By 1959 he reached his signature style of stripes on canvas.
Despite of his prediction– “I can expect little from this exhibition” from his production notes - these works of stripes and its concept were welcomed by some art reviewers and aristocrats that were looking for something new following a minimal art movement in New York. “Work”s raised more of its reputation and perception widely in the 80’s but the artist never got drawn in to the wave of fashion in the art world.
