Friedrich von Amerling

Biography from Richard Rhoda Fine Art

Friedrich Amerling (Vienna, 1803, Vienna, 1887) started his career illuminating maps and prints before attending the Akademie der bildenden Kunste (Vienna Academy of the Arts) from 1815 until 1824 under Hubert Maurer and others.  From 1824 to 1826 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where he was taught by Josef Bergler.

In 1827 he traveled to London, where he was influenced by the portraitists Sir Thomas Lawrence and Joshua Reynolds.  Further journeys led him to Paris, where he studied with Horace Vernet.  Back in Vienna, Amerling was commissioned to paint the Emperor Francis I of Austria, (Kunsthistorisches Museum,Vienna.).

With this work, Amerling became famous doing portraiture for the Austrian court, the aristocracy and middle class. He received the Reichel prize of the Academy in Vienna in 1829.

In 1833 Amerling traveled to the Netherlands and, upon his return, visited the artistic centers of Munich and Düsseldorf, where he met the influential academy director Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow.  Amerling's career reached its height from the 1830s through the 1850s.

In the early 1840s, he traveled to Rome where he worked with Leopold Pollak and August Riedel, who influenced his work with their depictions of Italian beauties. Besides painting formal portraits, Amerling developed a painting category that remained close to portraiture but crossed over to a slightly sentimental type of genre or character painting, mostly depicting beautiful young women.

Apart from numerous other honors, he received the Orden der Eisernen Krone (knighthood) in 1879.  Upon his death in 1887, a street in Vienna was designated the Amerlingstrasse in his name.
