Nam June Paik was born in Seoul and settled with his family in Japan in 1950, where he studied history of music and art, as well as philosophy from 1952 to 1956. He then went to Munich and continued his music studies at the local university. He moreover studied composition at the Freiburg Music Academy. He collaborated with the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Inspired by John Cage, he was involved in the realization of Fluxus performances. In the 1960s, Paik began working with manipulated televisions. Later, he developed his well-known large installations, including a large number of monitors, which featured edited video tapes. Paik's work has been shown internationally in many exhibitions, including the documenta 8 in Kassel and the Venice Biennial in 1993. Nam June Paik has received the Will-Grohmann-Award, the Kaiserring of Goslar and the Picasso Medal of the UNESCO, among others. (cko)

Yan Lei graduated from the Hebei School of Arts and Crafts and studied at the Chinese Academy of Arts in Hangzhou until 1991. He works in the field of performance, photography, painting, sculpture and installation and has already exhibited internationally. He was also a participant of the Documenta in Kassel twice. Yan Lei lives and works in Beijing and Hong Kong. (cko)
