Wang was born in Yimeng Mountain, Shandong, China. He got his artistic start by drawing posters for the Shandong Yiyuan factory, showcasing their factory performances under the auspices of the new cultural revolution in China, centered around the work in the factory. On the basis of his early success, he began his art studies in 1972, graduating from the Shandong School of Art in 1975. He continued his art studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, graduating in 1982; upon graduation, he became a professor at his alma mater. During this period, his works gained their first public showings, both domestically and abroad in France and Japan. His painting Farmhouse Daughter gained particular fame, launching his career as an artist.
After his second graduation in 1982, Wang's works started to win awards at several different art shows, leading to several highly successful solo shows around the world. In 1994, Wang was a founding member of a group called Beijing Realism in order to support Chinese realists and display their works. Shortly thereafter, the group changed its name to China Realism when it started to admit artists from outside of Beijing.
Wang currently lives in Beijing where is a respected artist. He combines his ability to paint details of skin tone with a vast love of his rural hometown, apparent in the landscape backgrounds that he paints for his subjects.
