Born in 1972 in Lintau, West Sumatra, Indonesia, a co-founder and member of the Jendela Art Group, Jumaldi Alfi has consistently been exploring new possibilities in painting traditional southeast asian art. He attended the Indonesian High School of Arts in Yogyakarta in 1993, and furthered his art education after that by attending the Indonesian Institute of Arts, also located in Yogyakarta, in 1999.
In the last ten years his painting has shown shifting theme and styles. He has come to the conclusion that is painting is a personal therapy by which to accommodate and control various issue troubling his mind. With such a mindset he began choosing certain themes and approaches to develop in series of paintings, combining expressionism, raw-art, and sometimes realism too. Alfi makes his paintings autobiographical notes and at once fields of experiments to keep exploring and testing various possibilities of painting - more as ideas than just the products of imagining on canvas.
