Paul MacCormaic was born in Dublin Ireland in 1961 and continues to live and work there. He has been exhibiting since he was 17 years old and was largely self-taught when he embarked on his formal education in art a the age of 41. He had already 4 solo exhibitions by then and had won the prestigious KPMG Prize for painting at the Oireachtas Expo (official Irish government exhibition)in 2001. At University College Dublin (UCD)Paul read History and History of Art and on graduating in 2005 was enrolled in the Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT)for its final 4th year in Fine Art, his UCD degree gave him exemption from the first 3 years.
MacCormaic's work has always hovered around realism and popular culture. Much of his output has its source in commercials and advertisement as well as direct observation of current trends and life in the suburbs. Objects and practices that have been discarded interest him as well as new fads and phobias. Since leaving college in 2006, he has had 2 solo shows and taken part in many group exhibitions and art festivals. His work became larger in scale, consisting mainly of acrylic paintings, some oils and of late, photography and a return to drawing and collage, which he began with as a teenager.
