Joseph Bacon

Biography from the Archives of askART

Joseph Bacon was born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area.  In college, he studied science and philosophy, and music, on the side.

Following military service, he enrolled in the California School of Fine Arts (currently the San Francisco Art Institute).  There, he studied metal sculpture and bronze casting extensively.

Since then, he spent many years painting and exhibits, more or less, annually.  He also plays the guitar and performs both regionally and internationally.

In 1999, Bacon visited London for five months.  He spent much of his time in the British Museum studying ancient sculpture.  He was especially drawn to the 'archaic' Greek and Etruscan work, as well as much fine work from the near and Middle East.  Most often it was the small pieces that caught his attention.  There, he found the greatest freedom and vitality.  He was inspired to take up sculpture again, and has produced hundreds of small pieces over the last five years.  He is currently making larger bronze versions of some of these smaller pieces.

Bacon has had solo exhibitions at the Bonnafont Gallery in San Francisco, at the Ross Curtis Gallery in Sausalito, California and at the Bradford Gallery and Le Moulin in San Anselmo, California.  He has also participated in group shows in San Francisco at the Fort Mason Center, at the Charles Campbell Gallery, and at ArtZone 461 Gallery.
