John Wagner

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following is from the artist, 7/31/2002

John Philip Wagner, artist, craftsman and entertainer, is a painter of Southwest subjects.

As a child, he plastered the walls of his elementary school with paintings of Egyptian pyramids and Roman ships and in later years, studied theatre arts as well as painting, sculpture and printmaking. His residence in New Mexico led to many works of Native American and Southwestern Art.

While living in Santa Fe, he created the first version of the puppet theatre now known as "Wagner Marionettes". He spends much of his time entertaining children with his little players on string, and travels the eastern states with his mobile theatre. Of his paintings, he says:

"I believe the beauty of an object or idea, when shared with others and sent out into the world, is increased by degrees becoming a kind of mutual celebration with the artist, a sort of master of ceremonies."
