Wallace Rugg, 20th century
Wallace Rugg, a portrait painter who lived in the Lowell, Massachusetts area in the 1950's, exhibited portraits and other paintings throughout the New England states. As of October 8, 2000, the opening date of an exhibit called "Remember the Ladies" at the Whistler House Museum of Art, Rugg was living in New Hampshire. A portrait of Edith Burger (Mrs. Calvin Burger) was included in this exhibit curated by Catherine L. Goodwin. Burger was secretary of the Lowell Art Association for 35 years and supported all of its many activities. She served on the Middlesex Woman's Club, the Lowell Garden Club, the Paint and Powder Club, and was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary.
Rugg painted a portrait of John J. Flannery, the first City Manager of Lowell. In 1943, Flannery was Lowell's City Treasurer.
Wallace Rugg's work is in the collections of the City of Lowell - City Hall and Edith Burger.
