KyungChai Ryu

Biography from K Auction

Ryu KyungChai was born in Haeju, Hwanghae-do Province. He made his debut when he was accepted for the Joseon Art Exhibition in 1940, and then went to Japan to study in the 1940s. Shortly after the establishment of the Government of the Republic of Korea, Ryu came into the spotlight by receiving the inaugural Presidential Award at the first National Art Exhibition. He was a leading figure in the post-independence Korean art scene, continuing to teach as a university professor and serving on the jury of the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea. Since the 1960s Ryu had continued to be involved in many exhibitions both domestically and internationally, gaining fame not only within Korea but also within the international art scene. Throughout his artistic career, Ryu had shown many different styles within his oeuvre; during the 1950s Ryu mainly dealt with representational works by depicting harmony between nature and people, and in the 1960s he changed his style to abstrachon using simple colors, conveying a sense of remorse and nostalgia. By the 1980s Ryu KyungChai preferred simple, geometric color abstraction in his works.
