Clemente Ochoa

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following information is from the artist, March 2013.

Born in Cascante, (Navarra), Spain, after his studies in Pamplona and Zaragoza, Clemente Ochoa moved to Barcelona in order to pursue his studies in Painting and Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Saint George. He has been Professor of Plastic Expression at Central University of Barcelona. He works and lives in Cascante and Barcelona.

Three stages in the project of his artistic creation can be distinguished: There is the epoch of academic realism, during which, dedicated to direct forms, he cultivated pictorial scenery and portraits. The second stage is "pyramidal" sculptures, where the emerging of the immense is obvious, of the conquest from the ground. Immense torsos, especially those of feminine forms, are completed with small and lyrical delicate heads and the very large bases are decorated with spiritual delicate tracery. A third stage is geometry and abstraction coming to the fore and the treating of figures with an elegant style and dynamic forms full of gesture and life.

The philosopher J. L. Aranguren has written: "Betwteen the plasticity of the "heavy solid forms"and the "light agile forms"...his works attain the synthesis of the one and of the other: leaden, they rest solidly on the earth and, taking on agility, they become airborne and are elevated toward the Sublime. Or we could say that they complement themselves and, at the same time, they evade each other".

Over forty Clemente Ochoa sculptures are installed in public spaces, in Spain, France, Andorra, Switzerland and United Arabs Emirates. Following is a list of those sculptures and site locations.
