Rania Matar

Biography from the Archives of askART

Award winning photographer Rania Matar was born and raised in Lebanon and originally trained as an architect at the American University of Beirut before immigrating to the US in 1984 and continuing her studies at Cornell University in New York.

After attending the New England School of Photography and studying in Oaxaca, Mexico under Magnum photographer Constantine Manos, she began a successful career as a full-time artist.

Having exhibited throughout the US and abroad, she is the recipient of several honors including first prize in the Women in Photography International and an honorable mention from the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award.

Matar's work is housed in international collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the private collection of the Emir of Kuwait.

Based in Boston, she teaches documentary photography at the Massachusets College of Art and Design and makes frequent trips to Lebanon where she conducts workshops with teenage girls in the country's refugee camps with the assistance of NGOs.

Galleries in Beirut, Dubai, Boston, Chicago and Houston currently represent her photography.

Often focusing on the lives of women and the issues that surround them, in the past she has highlighted the experiences of women and children in the Middle East with a particular emphasis on Palestinian refugee camps, the recent rise of the hijab and its meaning, the aftermath of war, and religious communities such as Christians in Lebanon—all with the intention of giving voice to the "forgotten or misunderstood."

Recently she has expanded this theme to include the realities faced by teenage girls, both in the US and the Arab world and is currently working on a project titled "A Girl and Her Room," which has already garnered critical praise.
