Wilhelm von Kügelgen (1802-1867)
studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. From 1825-26, he lived in Rome and met the German painter and draftsman Ludwig Richter. His circle of friends included, furthermore, Caspar David Friedrich, Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and Carl Gottlieb Peschel.
From 1833, Kügelgen was a court painter at the Anhalt-Bernburg Burg’s summer residence in Ballenstedt. Kügelgen gained his greatest fame, however, by his literary work ‘Jugenderinnerungen eines alten Mannes’ [Old Man’s Reminiscenes of His Youth], which, in 1922, was published already in the 230th edition.
