Ian Burn

Biography from the Archives of askART

An Anglo-Australian artist, Ian Burn is best known for participating in the New York part of Art & Language, a conceptual art collective of the 1970s. His earlier work was minimalist.

In 1977, he returned to Australia to work for the Australian labor movement in exhibitions expressing issues of its members. He also did landscape painting during this time, with many of these pieces having calligraphy inscriptions.

"Art in America", December 1997
The following, submitted May 2005, is from Helen Arendsen, owner of work by the artist for whom she modeled.

Ian Burn studied at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia under the guidance of Eric Westbrook in the late 1950's early 1960's. He then moved to London where I believe his work is hung at the Tate Gallery. I believe he then went onto New York where he taught art.

I know he has work hung in the National Gallery of Australia in the A.C.T.--I have actually seen this contemporary piece.

I was told he died in a drowning accident on the N.S.W. coast of Australia after returning here (I cannot verify this).

I do own some work by this artist-One piece a Portrait of myself ---he used me as a model in the latter years of his study, and gave me the piece. The other painting I have is a watercolour approximately.14" by 20", signed in the lower right hand corner and dated '61 which I love.
