Susan A. (Sparrow) Point

Biography from the Archives of askART

A proponent of decorative objects, Susan Point is from Coast Salish, Alaska, and her heritage is Coast Salish Native American culture. However, she knew very little about the ways of her people and has done much research to reflect carefully the Salish traditions. One of her inspirations for her cylindrical objects are the tools, called spinning whorls, used by the people to make clothing.

She also creates small to monumental abstract work that often incorporates archaic Salish two-dimensional designs. She has a non-traditional color sense and works in a variety of media from glass to wood, using adzes chisels, and knives.

She began her career at age 28 when she was a secretary expecting her first child and took a jewelry making course at Vancouver Community College on her maternity leave. A year later, she started print making.

One of her pieces is at the Vancouver International Airport.
