Tom Sachs

Biography from the Archives of askART

Working from a studio in Manhattan, Tom Sachs makes meticulous looking objects that reflect ironic twists on modern life, combining glamour with the every day symbols such as a MacDonalds meal in Tiffany wrap. He says his favorite term is "bricolage", meaning the art of assembling objects with the materials at hand. ("Art & Auction").

Sachs grew up in Westport, Connecticut, and his mother, who became his business manager, encouraged him to do crafts projects--something he says he never quit. He studied industrial design at the Architectural Association in London with furniture designer Tom Dixon whom he credits as teaching him about salvaging objects.

In 1994, he got his first important public recognition with his Christmas nativity scene at Barney's department store in New York, which was cancelled because of public shock. He created Hello Kitty as the baby Jesus and cartoon characters as accompanying figures.
