Biography from the Archives of askART

Born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 25, 1877. After graduating from Polytechnic High School, O'Brien studied art and design at UC Berkeley (1897-98). During a tour of Europe (1911-14) he painted 30 landscapes and 12 figure works; the remainder of his work was done in New England, San Francisco, and Mill Valley, CA. O'Brien died in San Francisco on Sept. 27, 1919. Exh: PPIE, 1915; Stanford University, 1922 (memorial); Calif. Industries Expo (San Diego), 1926; CPLH, 1927. In: Shasta State Park.

Known for landscapes of New England and California, he was primarily a resident of San Francisco although he spent three years in Europe from 1911 to 1914 and painted both figures and landscapes.

He was born in San Francisco and graduated from Polytechnic High School and then studied art and design at the University of California, Berkeley before spending time in Europe and then settling in San Francisco where he lived 2871 Sacramento Street.
