Thomas Peirce

Biography from the Archives of askART

Thomas Mitchell Peirce    (1864 -  1929)

"A few years ago the pages of the current magazines and art journals were graced by the appearance of the "Peirce girl."  This charming conception of the American girl soon became quite as popular as the Gibson girl and the Christy girl, and had a distinctive quality and originality.  The Peirce girl attracted the attention of the European critics and very recently an article published in Berlin, Germany, on American artists who were drawing the American girl said:  "Thomas Mitchell Peirce is the only one of the younger men who is not influenced in any way by Mr. Gibson.  Mr. Peirce gets his inspiration from unknown sources."

Thomas Mitchell Peirce was born in this city (Grand Rapids) and is the son of the late P.R.I. Peirce.  His mother, Mrs. Cordelia Peirce resides with him in New York.  Mr. Peirce lived in this city until he was twenty-six years old, but he did not develop his talent for drawing until two or three years later while living in Chicago.  From there he went to New York and at the age of twenty-nine submitted his first sketch which was accepted.  For the next two years his cartoons and humorous drawings appeared almost daily in the New York Evening World and in Life, Judge and other weekly papers.  During this time he developed a taste for more serious work and abandoned comics.

For the past year Mr. Peirce had devoted himself exclusively to working in color and his immediate future work will be in figure painting and watercolor."
