Born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, landscape painter Ida Bolles began studying art at the age of 18 when she lived in Washington DC where she attended the Corcoran Art School and the Art Students League. She continued her studies in Cincinnati with George Hopkins and Frank Duveneck, and she also took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago with Bertha Perry and in Washington with Rhoda Holmes Nicholls.
In 1897, she went to Denver because of her husband's health, and in 1919, having been widowed, she married Dr. Newton Bolles, and they settled in Laguna Beach, California. She began painting earnestly in the West, and in 1900, she first visited Taos, New Mexico and hired a driver and traveled into the surrounding countryside, then to ...
