A painter of landscapes, still lives and portraits Rugh was trained in classic atelier methods of the masters, but also enjoys contemporary techniques and discovering new ways of putting his own special style to enliven familiar themes.

Rugh was born in Germany and spent his early years in the Middle East. He studied ceramics and woodworking in Cairo as a teenager. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. In 1994, he received a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design with honors.
For a time, he worked at the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole as an illustrator. He lives on Cape Cod and has a studio with his wife, Hillary Osborn also an artist, in Cataumet, MA. He works full time in the fine arts and has created original work for Barnes and Nobles, The New York Times, Newsweek, Reader's Digest, Microsoft and the Washington Post. His work is shown on book covers and has been featured in the Cape Cod Magazine, Home Gallery Magazine and others.
He has been a featured artist in several film documentaries. He is a Copley Master and signature member of the Copley Society in Boston, a juried member of Oil Painters of America and an associate at the Guild of Boston Artists. He has taught at workshops at R.I.S.D.,Cataumet Arts Center, Cape Museum of Fine Arts and the Cape Cod Arts Association. He has had solo shows at RISD, Highfield Hall Falmouth,Cataumet Arts Center, and other galleries on Cape Cod. He participated in group shows at the Am. Institute of Yemeni Studies and throughout New England. He has won at least 5 awards at the Copley Society.
