Charles Gaines

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following is from the Brigitte March Gallery:

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Charles Gaines is represented in the following literature:

Catalogue, Whitney Biennale, Whitney Museum of Art, New York, 1975
Landscape Visions, Office of the Chancellor, Art Gallery Long Beach, CA

In 1991 the work of this American conceptual artist was shown in four well- known galleries: Leo Castelli and John Weber, New York; Dorothy Goldeen, Los Angeles; and Lavignes-Bastille, Paris.

In the catalo, Charles Gaines-Survey Exhibition, the New York critic Kirby Gookin wrote: "In her review of Charles Gaines' exhibition "Motion: Trisha Brown Dance", Losa Liebmann describes Gaines as 'a loopy, poetically inclined conceptualist!' Such a conflation of terms implies that there is an aspect to Gaines' artistic practice that strays from the rigorously systemic, quasi -scientific method of Conceptual Art. Unlike many of his conceptualist colleagues, Gaines directly confronts the positivist practice of Conceptual Art. For Gaines, logical systems are not objective truth but subjective practices. One discovers in his work, that any codification of the world through a logical means ultimately leads to an expression of irrationality." K.G. New York, March 1991

Born in Charleston June 23, 1944, he was raised in Newark, New Jersey.
