Born in Chicago, Joan Fabian received her B.F.A. from the Art Institute of
Chicago where she studied with artists of the "Hairy Who" Movement, such as
Karl Wirsum and was greatly interested in the variety of cultures and people
living in the Chicago neighborhoods. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio, moving to San Antonio in order to find new influences and challenges in its Hispanic culture.
Exhibiting since 1981, Joan has had over 14 one-person exhibitions, most recently being at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. In addition, her work has been widely exhibited in numerous group exhibits throughout the United States and abroad. She has won many grants and honorariums, such as Fulbright Scholar Award to Pakistan and a Chicago Artists Grant. It is in Pakistan that Joan became interested in Mogul Miniature Painting where it
is still practiced.
In addition to being an artist, she is also a curator, world-traveler, writer and lecturer/educator-with a focus on culture and the arts. Joan gave a lecture at San Antonio College with Shahzia Sikander, a Pakistani/New York artist on the influences of the culture of Pakistan on their art. Joan's work is intended to provoke questions of what we believe to be beautiful and to stimulate thought regarding the act of seeing. Many of her works are based on references to Pakistani culture as in "Bazaar Activity" 2001 and "Bashir's Big Night" 2001 and have double meanings. Her work is in The Jones Center for Contemporary Art, Austin, TX.
