Charles Taffs, also known as C.H. Taffs, was born in Camberwell, Surrey England in 1876. The artist initially studied in South Kensington, winning student awards such as 3rd place for animals and honorable mention in figures. He started a succesful career in England primarily illustrating books and magazines. However, while living in London from 1896 to 1905, he also exhibited at the London Royal Academy.
As told in a story in American Woman's Magazine in 1915, he traveled presumably on a vacation to New York only to be given commissions by a publisher he met on the voyage.
