Cheryl Tall

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following is from the artist, who lives in Carlsbad, California:

I work in clay and mixed media, creating figurative sculpture which has been shown around the world.  I also teach clay sculpture workshops at museums and universities.

My work is an expression of my life.  Some of my influences have been Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, Peter Voulkos and Adrian Arleo. All have been great role models for me.  My father was another big influence. He was a builder and carpenter and as a young girl I loved to watch him construct functional pieces in wood.

I started painting at a young age and sold my first artwork at age 13. I continued working in two dimensional artwork for several years, mixing color in an abstract manner and building up the surfaces of the canvas. When I started working in clay, I finally found the surface I was craving. My current work blends an abstract painterly quality with the textured surface of three dimensional clay.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, with a BFA in l974, I opened Cheryl Tall Sculpture Studio and began making commissioned art works in clay.  I received my Master of Fine Arts degree in 1995 from the University of Miami.

In 1996, I was one of 14 international artists chosen to participate in the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname, Japan, a city with a history of 900 years in ceramics. Other artist residencies include Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine, 1997 and 2001, Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, 1998, and a mixed media sculpture workshop in Samos, Greece in 1999. In July of 2000, I led an artist residency in the medieval town of Venasque, Provence, in the south of France.

My work has been published in The Ceramic Design Book by Lark Publications, in Low Fire Surface Design by Lynn Peters, in Studio Potter Magazine, Ceramic Monthly Magazine, Clay Times, and American Craft Magazine
