Craig Nelson

Biography from the Archives of askART

Illustrator, teacher and painter Craig Nelson lives in Sonoma County, California.

Encouraged by his parents and Aunt Lois who supplied him with boxes of paper every Christmas, Nelson developed his talents by drawing monsters in cars with big gear shifts and eventually pastel graduation portraits for $15 a piece.

When he was 19 Nelson enrolled in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California. After graduation he began illustrating album covers for Sammy Davis Jr, Rick Nelson, Neil Diamond, Natalie Cole and Loretta Lynn. He also did numerous movie posters including "The Cowboys", "Slap Shot" and "Homeward Bound" as well as movie star portraits.

In 1974 he returned to the Art Center of Design as a painting teacher. In 1990 Craig Nelson became the director of fine art at the Academy of Fine Art in San Francisco. After moving to Northern California Nelson began devoting himself to painting. Nelson likes to capture scenes that other people have not painted. His figure works captures people in unexpected ways. His painting, "Dancers Three" finds the graceful dancers during a break instead of a more traditional dancing pose.

In 1997 Nelson was awarded the Grand Teton Natural History Award at the Art for the Parks annual competition.
