Biography from the Archives of askART

Artist Kathy Paivinen's childhood home in Adrian, Michigan, was filled with all sorts of animals. "We always had lots of pets," Paivinen says, "Dogs, birds, lizards...a real menagerie. I was interested in science too, so when I went to the University of Michigan I studied zoology with an emphasis on animal behavior. I started taking some art courses, and after graduating I decided to go into scientific illustration." However, capturing on canvas the lively nature of horses, cats and dogs proved to be a much more rewarding career.

A member of the Society of Animal Artists, Paivinen has exhibited at the Society's annual show and was a prize winner at "The Art Show at The Dog Show," an all-canine exhibition held in Kansas.

"I can't imagine getting bored with animals," Paivinen says. "I might change my painting technique over time, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, my favorite subject will always be animals, they never cease to amaze me!"
