Biography
Joey Nakai

Navajo artist Joey Nakai was raised in Red Valley, Arizona by parents who exposed him to a world outside of traditional customs.

After a series of odd jobs, Nakai earned an associates degree in welding technology from San Juan Community College in Farmington, New Mexico. After graduation, a night class in metal sculpture was offered by a favorite professor, John Hoff. Nakai took the course five times each time earning an "A." His first metal artwork was an elk made of scrap steel.

Nakai has since converted his garage in Farmington into a welding shop where he can create his sculptures of fish, horses, deer and wolves.
