Biography from the Archives of askART

Born in St Marys, Elk County, PA on Feb. 12, 1860, Josephine Volk, in 1884, settled in Santa Cruz, CA where her brothers had established a grocery and fruit business. For several years she lived in the rural area of Cave Gulch but then moved to town where she caught the eye of the county physician, Dr. W. H. Keck. They were soon married and built a home on Soquel Avenue hill, adjoining the hospital, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Artistically inclined, she studied locally with L. P. Latimer and Frank Heath. She was a charter member of the Santa Cruz Art League and helped establish the statewide art exhibitions.

Mrs. Keck died in Santa Cruz on Oct. 17, 1936. Her work includes coastals and landscapes of the area near her home.
