Iku Nagai

Biography from Triton Museum of Art

With an influence from both the East and the West, Iku K. Nagai merges her diverse knowledge, training and philosophies into her work creating her own visual language. She studied at the Sojusha School of Art in Tokyo, Japan and then at San Jose State University, where she achieved a Masters of Fine Arts. The effect of this fusion of cultures and styles is pronounced in her work by the patterns seen in her playfulness with spatial relationships. Arranging dynamic strokes of line, varying sizes of shapes and splashing opposite colors next to one another creates equal balance of elements in her work. Selected major group exhibitions include the Sozo Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Triton Museum of Art and UC Davis C.N. Gorman Museum, Davis California. Born in Kyoto, Japan, became a US citizen in 1958.
