Steve Frenkel

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following information was submitted in July of 2006 by the artist:

I was born an identical twin, in Detroit, Michigan, on April 28th, 1942.  Our family lived there during all my growing-up years.  Leonard Frenkel and Lillian (Hersh) Frenkel were my parents.  My parents and brother, Alan, are all deceased.
I attended Schulze Elementary through the 8th grade and then Mumford High School through graduation in 1960.  My college years were spent at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design in 1965.

My first career was in the fine paper business and I was employed by both paper distributors and mills through the early1980's.  In1983 I earned a certificate in graphic design at Atlanta's Portfolio Center.  For the next dozen or so years I practiced graphic design, primarily as a freelancer.  When design practice went entirely to the computer I chose to leave the field.

I'd begun to paint in 1991.  As my graphic design work faded away I began to work in art galleries, at a book publisher and at graphic design production.  I painted evenings and weekends.  In early 1997 my first wife and I ended our marriage of 31 years.  Since then I've been able to spend most of my time on my fine art career.  In October of 1999 I married Donna (Culpepper) Frenkel.  Donna is an analyst for an international insurance company and a promising writer.  Our home, including my studio, is in Marietta, GA.  Between us we have four children and three grandchildren.

I've been showing my work since the early1990's , primarily in commercial galleries and have participated in dozens of curated and juried shows.  I've shown my art in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.  Since 1997 I've been published three times in New American Paintings and once in American Art Collector (Alcove Books).  My work can be found in over 150 private, corporate and public collections.
