Described as an "amateur still life and portrait artist", Lavinia Wright was born in Charleston, South Carolina where she met and married engraver Charles Cushing Wright in 1820.  The couple lived in New York City.  She was noted as an educator and champion of women's rights.

A manuscript biography of her and her husband is in the New York Historical Society.
