He studied illustration at Pratt Institute, graduating in 1988 and then wrote and illustrated a children's book titled "I Wouldn't Be Scared".
He went from New York City to the University of Kansas where he graduated in 1994 with highest honors. In 1997, he received an MFA from Northwestern University and from 1996 to 1997 held scholarships from the Chicago Union League Civic & Arts Foundation.
